Vinod Khosla Criticizes Trump’s “Depraved Values” and Elon Musk’s Role in Spreading Misinformation
The Future of AI, But First… Politics
During a Monday interview at TechCrunch Disrupt 2024, investor and entrepreneur Vinod Khosla veered off topic from the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to deliver a stark warning about the upcoming U.S. election and its potential impact on democracy.
A Warning from Khosla
When asked about AI’s future and risks, Khosla took a moment to express his concerns about the upcoming U.S. election. "Our democracy is definitely on the line," he said firmly, adding that it was imperative for individuals to consider the values of those they supported in the election.
Criticizing Trump and Musk
Khosla’s harsh words were directed at both former President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, who has publicly supported Trump in the past. "I can’t believe [Musk is] supporting somebody with such depraved values as Trump," Khosla stated bluntly. He continued, "I don’t know how to communicate on that front… How ridiculous can you get?"
Khosla specifically mentioned Trump’s claims of a ‘stolen’ election and the misinformation circulating about FEMA in the wake of devastating hurricanes. "If you say it was [stolen], I don’t really want to talk to you because we don’t share facts," he emphasized.
Accountability and Disinformation
The investor held Elon Musk accountable for helping spread this type of misinformation on X (formerly Twitter). Khosla credited Musk for his entrepreneurial endeavors, such as electric cars and ‘catching that rocket with chopsticks,’ but then shamed him for ignoring the "depravity" of Trump.
A Land Use Issue and a Feud
Khosla also referenced a land use issue where he had publicly feuded with Musk over making a formerly public beach parking lot private. When asked if Musk’s behavior had influenced his choices, Khosla responded humorously, "I bought my Tesla before Elon went crazy."
The Impact on Tech Industry
Musk and Trump criticism aside, Khosla said that the U.S. election may not have a significant impact on the tech industry specifically. He noted that the policies of both the right and left would be similar in terms of how they will affect the industry.
"It will be different in how we tax people, how we share wealth, what we do about the bottom 50% of the people in this country," Khosla said. "It will be very different for them."
